Isklar believes that exceptional purity should not cost the earth, and is committed to being the most environmentally responsible mainstream water brand in Europe. As a business, we have built all our operations around the principle of being one of the ‘greenest’ bottled water brands you can buy. We take into account everything we do and the impact of our suppliers, so that the water you buy has as little impact on the environment as possible.
Our facilities are all rated for low or zero carbon emissions. Where emissions are unavoidable we pay for 1.2kg of CO2 to be neutralised for every 1kg we produce, through CO2 saving projects around the world.
We also calculate and offset 120% of the emissions created by our raw materials before they reach us, and we do the same for emissions on transportation of our finished products to the customers. So not only is Isklar CarbonNeutral® as a company, so are the bottles we
use – from cradle to shelf.
Independent experts at The CarbonNeutral Company manage the CarbonNeutral® programme for us, offsetting our emissions with projects that meet the Voluntary Carbon Standard. To learn more, visit www.carbonneutral.com
About 80% of the emissions generated by a bottle of Isklar stem from the materials used in the bottle. We work with suppliers who are as committed as we are to reducing their own carbon footprint, and we look for those who also support good environmental practices, such as using renewable energy sources and recycling.
The weight of our sports bottle has been reduced by 15% and we will soon extend this to our other bottles. We are actively looking to adopt new technology to allow us to include recycled or biodegradable
materials in all our packaging, and we source local raw materials wherever possible.
The Isklar bottling plant is powered solely by hydro-electricity, which produces practically zero carbon emissions. Our state-of-the-art bottling line uses around 30% less energy than older equipment, and we retrieve the heat energy generated by the bottling process to provide heating for the rest of the plant. 99% of our waste is recycled – we only throw out one bag of rubbish every week!
Electric forklifts load bottles of Isklar directly onto container ships that dock in the deep-sea dock next to our plant, and we work with existing shipping lines.
Add it all up, and the result is that carbon emissions attributable to our product have been reduced to nearly zero.
Our owner, Sabco LLC, has invested in a very advanced ‘bottle to bottle’ recycling plant in Fujairah, UAE. This means that we can recycle used plastic bottles into new plastic bottles, and we guarantee that for every 1 bottle we sell, we’ll recycle 10.
Long term, this will reduce the need to use ‘virgin’ PET, not just to produce our bottles, but also bottles for other food and beverage manufacturers, so we see our investment in this as being key to driving a greener supply chain globally.
At the Water Innovation Awards 2008, Isklar was global winner of the best bottled water concept, and was awarded a silver medal for both best environmental initiative and best newcomer.
An international panel of industry representatives judged the awards, which received over 200 entries from more than 40 countries. We're really proud to be setting the standard for the category and you can be sure that we will continue to improve!
